All of our coaches are accredited with Swim South Africa and many of them share a personal love for the sport in their competitive sporting backgrounds. We're so excited to share our passion with you and help you to become the best swimmer you can be - wherever you are on your swimming journey!


Tracey Hemphill

Holistic Swimming Coach & Director

Accreditations: BA Sport Psychology(2002), Post Graduate in Education (2004), Swim South Africa Level 3 (2012), American Swim Coaches Association Level 5 (2019), Transformational Life Coach Accreditation & Neuro Linguistic Programming (2018), Master Life Coach (2019).

Tracey started coaching in High School, when her school team was left without a coach. She completed her Swim SA Learn to Swim course in 2004, and taught Learn to Swim for 2 years before starting to coach competitive swimming in 2006. She was nominated for Swim SA age group coach of the year by her peers in 2011.

Tracey loves to learn and has continued to educate herself in complimentary fields. In 2005 she completed a STOTT Pilates instructor course, she has also done a sport massage course. In 2016 she achieved her first international accreditation with the American Swim Coaches Association, and went on to be invited to complete the level 5 ASCA accreditation, which is the highest accreditation available through this association.

Tracey has a passion for wellness both physically and mentally, so in addition to her Sport Psychology degree she completed a course in Transformational Life Coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming with the intention to use the information to ensure athlete mental wellness and management.

Tracey is also a course facilitator for the American Swim Coaches Association for Level 1 & 2, having delivered courses all over the country. She has also lectured on her program in London and in various cities in South Africa.

Tracey is currently registered with Swim SA and Central Gauteng Aquatics having completed the necessary requirements, which include Level 1 first Aid, Child protection certification and relevant Swim SA certification. She is also a registered member of USRPTIA and ASCA, both international bodies specifically for swimming coaches.

Shaun Barson

Coach & Ex-Competitive Swimmer

Diploma in Sport Management and coaching, Swim South Africa Learn to Swim (1999), Coaching Level 1, American Coaches Association Level 2, 3 & 4 certificates.

Shaun started competitive swimming at a young age and has worked with most of our country’s
greatest coaches. As a competitive swimmer, Shaun won numerous medals at schools and junior
national level. Shaun qualified for and participated in the Commonwealth Games trials and Olympic
trial in 2000. Shaun still enjoys competitive swimming at a masters level, where he still holds
numerous national records.

Shaun has been coaching swimming since High school. He has been involved and is still working in
all forms of swimming instruction from Learn to Swim through to Age Group competitive groups. He
joined Orcas Swimming in 2017, and we consider him a major asset to our program given that he is
adaptable and highly passionate about all of his programs.

Shaun is SSA and CGA registered, he holds a First Aid level 1 certificate as well as a child protection
certificate. He has recently taken his studies further, completing a personal fitness diploma, and is
busy with a diploma in Sports Science and Sports Massage.



Swimming Coach & Ex-Competitive Swimmer

Fernando holds a First Aid level 1 certificate as well as a child protection certificate and an  (ASCA) American Swimming Coaches Association Level 1. He has extended his studies with a Diploma in Tourism and is busy with further studies in education and swimming relevant certifications.

Fernando has been a coach for 7 years, since matric. His swimming has lead him to many opportunities, he has represented Gauteng a few times in the National SA schools champions and he received full colours for swimming at Northcliff high school. 

He was a regional medalist and national qualifier during his competitive career. He still enjoys being in the swimming pool and has started to participate in various open water and triathlon events.

Fernando is our senior learn to swim instructor and coach to our introduction squads. He is currently a teacher at LaSalle College and based at our Indoor swimming pool in Discovery.
